Overview

An easy, slow epiphyte for wood and rock detail. Glue or tie the rhizome to hardscape and keep it out of the substrate so it does not rot. It is content under low light without CO2, though CO2 and regular liquid fertilizer speed up the slow leaf count and improve colour. Keep the water stable: swings in temperature or pH can melt leaves, and strong light on such slow growth invites algae. Propagate by cutting the rhizome.

In the wild

Kedagang Long is a trade form in the Kedagang group of Bucephalandra, named for a collection area in Kalimantan on Borneo. Like the rest of the genus the parent plants are rheophytes, anchored to rocks and wood in fast, clean forest streams, growing emersed on the banks in the dry season and fully submersed when the rivers rise.

Good to know

Bucephalandra (family Araceae, tribe Schismatoglottideae) is a Bornean genus whose trade names track collection sites rather than formal taxonomy, and Kedagang covers a small cluster of forms sold as Round, Mini and Long. The Long form carries noticeably longer, narrower leaves with wavy margins in plain green, with the fine pale dots typical of the genus and a weaker metallic sheen than the dark classic Kedagang.

Did you know

Kedagang is a place, not a plant. The name covers several forms collected around one Bornean locality, and shops tell them apart by leaf outline alone: Round, Mini, Long. The Long form trades the classic Kedagang's dark blue shimmer for length and movement.
