Overview

Care is standard Anubias: attach the rhizome to hardscape or set it on top of the substrate, never under it. Low light and no CO2 are enough, and the tough, bitter leaves shrug off most plant-eating fish, so it suits rough company like cichlids. The textured leaves hold detritus a little more than smooth ones, so decent flow helps, and in bright tanks the slow-growing blades will collect algae. Feed lightly through the water column and divide the rhizome to propagate.

In the wild

Wrinkle Leaf is a cultivated selection of Anubias barteri and is not found in the wild. The species grows along streams and river margins in West Africa, rooted to rocks and wood in the splash zone, emersed in the dry season and submersed at high water.

Good to know

A member of the Araceae sold as Anubias barteri 'Wrinkle' or 'Wrinkle Leaf'. The blade puckers between sunken veins and the margins ripple slightly, giving each leaf a hammered texture that shows in both emersed and submersed growth. It is a mid-sized barteri form, larger than the nana group but well short of the species' broadest varieties.

Did you know

The wrinkling is structural, not a deficiency: the blade tissue grows faster between the veins than the veins themselves lengthen, so healthy new leaves emerge already puckered.
