Overview

Treat it as a slow, fussier anubias. Attach the rhizome to wood or stone and never bury it. The white tissue does not photosynthesize, so the plant runs on its green sectors and grows even slower than plain Broad Leaf; give it medium light, and CO2 plus lean water-column fertilization helps it stay ahead of the algae that loves to settle on white leaves. Keep it in decent flow and wipe leaves when spot algae shows. Watch for reversion: shoots that come through solid green will outgrow the marbled ones, so cut them off at the rhizome if you want to keep the white.

In the wild

'Broad White' is a cultivated selection of Anubias barteri var. barteri 'Broad Leaf' and only exists in nurseries and tanks. The parent species grows in and along shaded forest streams in West Africa, attached to rocks and logs, emersed at the margins and submersed at high water.

Good to know

Family Araceae. Anubias barteri is named after Charles Barter, the botanist on the 1857 Niger expedition, and var. barteri is the broad-leaved typical variety. 'Broad White' layers a chimeric variegation over the 'Broad Leaf' form: white marbling where the leaf tissue lacks chlorophyll, marked differently on every leaf. Shops sell it as Broad White or White Broad Leaf; it is a trade cultivar with no botanical standing.

No two plants marble alike. The white patterning is a chimera, so each leaf draws its own map, and a plant that stops throwing white leaves has effectively reverted to ordinary Broad Leaf.
