Overview

As undemanding as any barteri form. Attach the rhizome to rock or driftwood and never bury it; a buried rhizome rots. Low light is enough, and because individual leaves last for months, strong light mainly earns you algae on the old blades. CO2 is unnecessary but nudges the slow growth along. It sits naturally in the midground on hardscape, and propagation is a matter of cutting the rhizome into pieces with a few leaves each.

In the wild

Striped is a cultivated selection of Anubias barteri and does not occur in the wild. The parent species grows in West Africa along shaded forest streams and riverbanks, rooted to rocks and wood at or just above the waterline, often with only its roots and rhizome underwater. That semi-emersed origin is why all barteri forms tolerate life above and below water.

Good to know

Anubias barteri, in the family Araceae, commemorates Charles Barter, botanist on the 1857 Niger expedition, while the genus name nods to Anubis, a reference to the shaded places these plants grow. Striped is a trade selection, not a described variety: it carries broad, deep green barteri leaves with sharp tips and pronounced ruffling, and the pale banding that names it reads strongest where light rakes across the corrugated blade.

Did you know

The stripes are partly an effect rather than a pigment pattern: the deep ruffles catch light and shadow across the blade, so the banding appears to shift as the light or the viewing angle moves.
