Overview

Care is plain anubias nana care. Attach the rhizome to driftwood or rock, never bury it, and give it low to medium light with decent flow across the leaves. No CO2 is needed; growth is slow, a new leaf every few weeks, and too much light just grows algae on the old ones. It works in the foreground or tucked into midground crevices, and the tough leaves hold up in tanks with grazers. Propagate by rhizome division, keeping roots and at least one leaf per cut.

In the wild

'Peacock' is a farm selection of Anubias barteri var. nana and does not occur in the wild. The parent variety comes from shaded streams in southwestern Cameroon, where it grows attached to rocks and roots at the water's edge, emersed or submersed as levels shift.

Family Araceae. Anubias barteri var. nana is the dwarf variety of the species, and 'Peacock' is a trade cultivar of it with no recorded parentage: sellers describe it variously as a selection or a cross, and no plant database has formalized it. In practice it is a compact nana with deep emerald, thick, leathery leaves, lightly rounded with a pointed tip.

Did you know

Nobody outside the farms seems to know exactly what Peacock is. Vendors disagree on whether it is a pure nana selection or a cross with another barteri form, and its parentage was never recorded, which is common for anubias cultivars that surface first in Southeast Asian nurseries.
