Overview
Treat it as ordinary Anubias nana with more texture. Attach the rhizome to wood or stone, keep it out of the substrate, and give it low light with no CO2; it is happiest tucked into a hardscape crevice or a shaded foreground corner of a nano tank. Growth is very slow, so algae on old leaves is the main enemy: keep light modest, keep flow decent, and let shrimp and snails graze the leaves clean. Propagate by cutting the rhizome into pieces with a few leaves each.
In the wild
A cultivated selection of Anubias barteri var. nana with no wild population. The parent variety grows on shaded rock and wood along forest streams in Cameroon, half in and half out of soft, flowing water. Trade plants are farm-raised emersed, which is why fresh imports often swap their first few leaves after going underwater.
Good to know
An Araceae cultivar built on the dwarf nana variety of Anubias barteri. The name describes the leaves: small, oblong blades with strongly ruffled, undulating margins that give a compact plant an outsized texture. It is a trade selection with no published origin, distinct from the broader-leaved barteri selection sold as Dark Angel.
Did you know
Each Anubias leaf is built to last years rather than weeks, which is how a plant this slow gets away with growing a handful of leaves a year. On Long Wavy the ruffle is baked in: new leaves unfurl already crimped, not shaped by flow or light.
