Overview
Standard Anubias care with a smaller footprint. Glue or tie the rhizome to rock or wood and never bury it, or it rots. It grows slowly in plain low-tech tanks under low to medium light with no CO2, and slow leaves under bright light collect algae, so shade it or keep the photoperiod modest. Liquid fertiliser helps but is not required. A good plant for nano hardscape detail, and it divides by cutting the rhizome.
In the wild
A cultivated hybrid with no wild habitat of its own. Its reported parents are African: the Anubias of the hobby grow as rheophytes along stream banks in West and Central Africa, rooted to rock and wood at or just above the waterline. This cross exists entirely in nurseries and is sold potted or as small rhizome portions.
Good to know
An Anubias hybrid in the family Araceae. Nurseries report the cross as Anubias 'Chili' with Anubias minima, which makes it a garden hybrid rather than a variety of Anubias barteri, whatever the shop tag says. It follows the pattern of earlier deliberate crosses like Anubias 'Frazeri': a compact rhizome, small tough leaves and slow, steady growth. The name comes from the small pepper-shaped leaves.
Did you know
Like Anubias 'Frazeri' before it, Chili Jalapeno is a made plant rather than a found one: nurseries report it as a deliberate cross of Anubias 'Chili' with Anubias minima, named for leaves shaped like little peppers.
