Care at a glance

Overview

Keep this Aspidoras in a group of six or more over smooth sand at 22 to 25 C in soft to neutral water. It is peaceful and active, much like a small cory, and it appreciates gentle flow. Feed sinking pellets and small frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia.

In the wild

The albater cory lives in clear, soft streams of the Tocantins system in central Brazil. It forages over sand among leaf litter and roots. Like other Aspidoras it stays in active groups on the bottom.

Good to know

Aspidoras are close cory relatives with a slightly different skull structure, and this species is sold under the hobby code C035. Its pale body carries four large, dark, slanted blotches along the side. A blind, cave dwelling catfish from the same Tocantins region was later described in the same genus as Aspidoras mephisto.
