Caring for the peppermint pleco

Give a peppermint pleco a tank of at least 66 gal (250 L), with stone stacks and driftwood forming caves over sand. It stays on the bottom among the rock. Filter heavily or add a circulation pump, so the water stays turbulent and well oxygenated.

Keep the water warm, at 79 to 86°F (26 to 30°C), with a pH of 6.0 to 7.2. It needs brisk flow and high oxygen, and stable conditions matter as much as the numbers. Feed it as an omnivore that leans to vegetables. Offer algae wafers and blanched zucchini or cucumber, along with regular sinking pellets and the occasional meaty frozen food.

The peppermint pleco is solitary and territorial for its size, so keep one to a tank. Try a small group only if you can give every fish its own cave and room to spread out. It is peaceful toward midwater tank mates and safe in a community tank.
