Overview
Keep six or more so males have an audience; the dorsal displays are the show. It eats all standard small foods. A softwater community with corys and dwarf cichlids suits it, or pair it with its river-mate melanostichos for a two-species biotope from one small Brazilian stream.
In the wild
This species shares the rio Doze de Outubro in the upper Tapajos headwaters with the melanostichos tetra, clear soft water in Mato Grosso forest country. Give it 22 to 27 degrees Celsius, pH 5.5 to 7.0, gentle current, and a planted, dark-floored tank.

Hyphessobrycon notidanos was described in 2006 and reaches about 3.5 centimeters. Males develop a taller, sail-like dorsal fin that gives the species its name, drawn from Greek for sharp-backed, and display with it constantly in groups.
