Overview

Give it midground space in a medium or large tank; a mature rosette can reach around 40 cm. It is a heavy root feeder, so plant it in nutrient-rich substrate or push root tabs under the crown, and keep the crown itself above the substrate so it does not rot. Medium to high light keeps the yellow tone bright and the speckling distinct, and CO2 is not required but speeds growth. Trim tattered outer leaves at the base, and take plantlets from flower stalks or split the crown to propagate.

In the wild

Yellow Sun is a commercial sword cultivar with no wild range. The species behind it come from the marshes and slow waters of South America, where swords root in soft mud and spend part of the year emersed and part submersed along the bank. Trade stock is farm-raised, usually in emersed form, and converts to underwater growth after planting.

Good to know

It belongs to the family Alismataceae. Yellow Sun is sold only as a hybrid Echinodorus cultivar; no seller documents the parentage. The draw is the coloring: mature blades are yellow-green with fine brownish speckling, while new leaves emerge pale red and shift toward yellow-green as they harden. Like most cultivated swords it is propagated vegetatively rather than from seed.

A single healthy rosette carries three color stages at once: pale red new leaves in the center, speckled transitional blades, and yellow-green mature leaves around the rim.
