Overview

Six or more in 60 liters over sand, warm and clean, is the recipe. It feeds enthusiastically on sinking and frozen foods and breeds along standard cory lines in the hands of patient keepers, with warm-then-cool water changes as the trigger. It mixes well with the Guapore region's other warm-water bottom fish.

In the wild

The Sarare cory comes from the upper Guapore drainage in Mato Grosso, Brazil, a warm sandy river region shared with several famous corys. It shoals over sand near cover. Keep it at 24 to 28 degrees Celsius, pH 5.8 to 7.2, on fine sand with wood and a leaf patch.

Good to know

Described by Dinkelmeyer in 1995 from the Rio Sarare, this species reaches about 5 centimeters and wears bold black mosaic patches over a metallic body. The Guapore system it calls home is a cradle of showy corys, from sterbai to gossei, and sarareensis holds its own in that company.
