Overview

Six or more in 55 liters over smooth sand keeps this small cory confident. It accepts fine sinking foods and frozen daphnia and bloodworm. Captive breeding follows the usual cory pattern and has been repeated by hobbyists, making it one of the more attainable Rio Negro rarities to reproduce.

In the wild

Kane's cory comes from upper Rio Negro tributaries, foraging in shoals over sand and litter in warm blackwater. It suits a soft-water tank with a fine sand floor, leaf cover, and gentle flow at 24 to 28 degrees Celsius and pH 5.5 to 7.0.

Good to know

Steven Grant described this species in 1998, naming it for the aquarist Gerald Kane. The 2024 revision lists it as Hoplisoma kanei. It reaches about 4.5 centimeters and pairs a peppered body with an orange nape patch, a smaller, softer-marked neighbor of the region's masked corys.
