Care at a glance

Overview

Keep Napo cories in a group of six or more over smooth sand at 22 to 26 C in soft, slightly acidic water. They are peaceful and active, and they suit a quiet planted community. Offer sinking pellets and small frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia.

In the wild

The Napo cory forages over sand in soft, slightly acidic tributaries of the upper Amazon. It lives in slow, shaded water among leaf litter and wood. The fish stay in groups on the open bottom.

Good to know

This is a small member of the elegans group, patterned with broken dark lines that form a loose net over a golden body. The 2024 revision placed it in the genus Gastrodermus as Gastrodermus napoensis. Males carry a dark blotch in the dorsal fin that females lack.

Male Napo cories carry a dark mark in the dorsal fin, which is the easiest way to tell them from females.
