Overview

An adaptable schooling tetra by rare-fish standards, happy in a standard community setup with six or more of its own kind. It accepts flake, granules, and frozen foods. Pair with peaceful fish of similar size; its slightly larger build lets it hold its own with rasboras and barbs.

In the wild

This tetra comes from short coastal streams in eastern Brazil, including Itaparica Island off Bahia, habitats separate from the big Amazonian systems. It is content in moderately soft to neutral water, 22 to 28 degrees Celsius and pH 6.0 to 7.5, with plants and gentle flow.

Hyphessobrycon itaparicensis reaches about 4.6 centimeters and takes its name from Itaparica Island. Coastal-basin tetras like this evolved in isolation from their Amazon relatives, which is why eastern Brazil keeps producing species found nowhere else.
