Overview

A straightforward schooling tetra for soft water: six or more, calm company, and the usual small dry and frozen foods. It adapts to community life better than many single-drainage rarities, making it a gentle introduction to the obscure end of the genus.

In the wild

Peugeot's tetra lives in streams of the rio Juruena system in northwestern Mato Grosso, soft forest water in the upper Tapajos country. Keep it at 22 to 27 degrees Celsius, pH 5.0 to 7.0, in a planted tank with tannins and gentle movement.

Good to know

Hyphessobrycon peugeoti was described in 2013 and reaches about 3.8 centimeters. It carries a golden body with a modest shoulder mark and warm-toned fins, and it entered science through surveys of forest streams on a reforestation estate.

Did you know

It is named after the Peugeot car family, whose carbon-sink forest project in Mato Grosso hosted the surveys that discovered the species in its streams.
