Overview
A peaceful schooler for soft-water communities; keep six or more with pencilfish, apistos, or small corys from the same region. It takes crushed flake, granules, and frozen daphnia or brine shrimp. Give the group open midwater and it will hold formation there most of the day.
In the wild
Known from the Madre de Dios drainage in southeastern Peru, this tetra lives in soft, warm forest streams. Keep it in subdued light over a dark substrate with wood and leaves, at 22 to 27 degrees Celsius and pH 5.5 to 7.0.

Hyphessobrycon eschwartzae was described in 2013 from the Madre de Dios system and reaches about 3.8 centimeters. It wears a bold dark stripe along a golden flank, and like many Peruvian rarities it is still known from a limited stretch of river.
