Overview

A tiny gravel-dwelling goby that spends most of its time motionless and half-buried, so a tank with the right substrate is what makes it visible at all. Keep a group in 40 liters over mixed sand and fine gravel with moderate flow. It is a hunter, not a grazer: feed frozen and live micro foods, and do not expect it to compete with faster fish. Best in a dedicated nano or with other stream species.

In the wild

Schismatogobius ampluvinculus lives in streams in Taiwan and the Philippines, on gravel beds in moderate current. Keep it at 23 to 27 degrees Celsius and pH 6.5 to 7.8, with clean, well-oxygenated water and a substrate it can settle into.

Good to know

Schismatogobius ampluvinculus reaches about 3 centimeters. The genus is scaleless and cryptically banded, and these fish match their gravel closely enough that a tank can look empty until food goes in. Males darken and show bold barring when displaying, which is where the tiger name comes from.

Did you know

Its whole genus went scaleless to slide between gravel grains; armor traded for disappearance.

Tank mates

Tiger schismatogobius is a peaceful, social species that keeps to the bottom. These picks match on water type, temperature, pH, size and temperament.
