Overview
A hardy, beginner-friendly moss with more structure and height than Java moss. Tie or glue it to wood or rock and it grips firmly, then grows upward into spiky cushions that take well to trimming for a tidy shape. It accepts low light and no CO2, but brighter light with CO2 gives denser, greener, more defined growth. Trim it back periodically, since shaded inner layers thin out and trap debris as the cushion thickens.
In the wild
A true moss from Southeast Asia, found growing on logs, rocks, and damp banks along streams and ponds, much like its relative Java moss. It is a hobby strain identified to the genus Taxiphyllum rather than a formally described species. Submersed it forms dense, dark-green cushions of branches that grow noticeably upward and outward, giving a pointed, spiky texture.
Good to know
Spiky moss is a true moss in the family Hypnaceae and is a Taxiphyllum strain, the same genus as Java moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri). It has never been pinned to a formal species name, so it carries the placeholder 'Spiky'. Its more three-dimensional, upward branching pattern is what separates it visually from the flatter, sprawling Java moss.
Did you know
Did you know 'spiky moss' has never actually been given a real species name? After years in the hobby it is still just Taxiphyllum sp. 'Spiky', a cultivated strain known only by its trade label rather than a formal botanical identity.
