Overview

As undemanding as any wendtii: low light, nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs, no CO2 needed, crown left above the soil. It grows into one of the larger wendtii forms, so give it midground space and expect a broad rosette rather than a compact tuft. New imports and big parameter swings trigger the usual crypt melt; trim the mush and wait for regrowth instead of pulling the plant. Its warm-river ancestry makes it one of the safer plant picks for tanks kept at 28-30 °C.

In the wild

A locality form of Cryptocoryne wendtii from the Mi Oya river in Sri Lanka's dry-zone lowlands, where the water runs notably warm. Like all wendtii it grows submersed in the streambed and emersed along the banks as levels fall, in shaded, gently flowing water.

Good to know

A water trumpet in the arum family, Araceae, named for its collection river rather than any formal taxonomic rank. It is one of the older named wendtii forms in the hobby and was first spread commercially by Tropica. Submersed plants carry long reddish-brown leaves with a well-marked, slightly hammered surface, and like the rest of the species the exact color shifts with light and nutrients.

Did you know

Did you know the Mi Oya river runs unusually warm, and the crypt named for it inherited the tolerance? It is a go-to plant for discus and other high-temperature tanks that cook most stem plants.
