Overview
One of the forgiving Sri Lankan crypts, in the same easy company as wendtii and beckettii. Plant it in the midground in a nutrient-rich substrate, give it low to medium light and let it settle; it needs no CO2. Appearance shifts with conditions: dim, lean tanks give taller, greener brown plants, while strong light with CO2 gives shorter, more compact reddish brown growth. Like all crypts it can melt after planting or a sharp change in parameters and recovers from the roots. It spreads by runners, and old clumps can be split at the rhizome.
In the wild
A broad leaved cultivated form of Cryptocoryne undulata, a species from central Sri Lanka that grows in and along streams, submersed in the flow and emersed on the banks. The 'Broad Leaves' plant is a nursery line rather than a distinct wild population.
Good to know
A water trumpet in the family Araceae. The trade form is a triploid line of Cryptocoryne undulata: the extra chromosome set makes it larger and broader leaved than the diploid species, 15-30 cm tall with a flecked brownish pattern over green. Tropica grows the pot as catalogue number 110A, and the same plant circulates in tissue culture as number 110B, long labelled Cryptocoryne undulatus 'Red' and now renamed 'Broad Leaf' there as well.
Did you know
The 'Broad Leaves' and 'Red' labels on shop shelves are the same Tropica plant wearing two catalogue numbers: the pot ships as 'Broad Leaves' under 110A, while the tissue culture cup, long printed Cryptocoryne undulatus 'Red', is 110B and now carries the 'Broad Leaf' name on Tropica's own page.
