Overview
Care is standard wendtii: nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs, crown above the soil, stable parameters, midground placement. It runs a step slower than plain wendtii because the variegated leaf tissue photosynthesizes less, and medium light keeps the pink and cream tones strong; in very dim tanks new leaves lean more bronze-green. CO2 is not required but nudges the slow growth along. Expect the usual crypt melt after planting or big parameter swings, and leave the rooted crown alone until new leaves come back.
In the wild
Florida Sunset is a nursery cultivar, not a wild plant. It was selected from Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Mi Oya' by Florida Aquatic Nurseries in 2006, so its wild ancestry traces to the Mi Oya river in Sri Lanka's warm lowlands, where wendtii grows along shaded streams, submersed in the channel and emersed on the banks.
Good to know
A water trumpet in the arum family, Araceae, and one of the few crypt cultivars deliberately raised in a nursery rather than collected. The pink, cream and bronze variegation is a stable trait of the cultivar, strongest on new leaves, and comes from patches of leaf tissue with little chlorophyll. Botanically it remains Cryptocoryne wendtii, so it keeps the species' spathe-and-spadix flower and its runner-spreading rosette habit.
Did you know
Most crypts in the trade are named for the river or country they were collected from. Florida Sunset is the odd one out, a Sri Lankan species selected in a Florida nursery in 2006 and named for the state that bred it.
