The Patoti betta is a large wild mouthbrooder that suits a spacious, well-covered tank. It is best with a little experience.

Caring for the Patoti betta

Give a pair of Patoti bettas a tank of at least 29 gal (110 L), with a base of 80 cm. Furnish it with wood and leaf litter, and keep the surface well covered with a tight lid.

Keep the water soft to medium, at 72 to 81°F (22 to 27°C) and a pH of 5.0 to 7.0. Feed meaty live and frozen foods. Varied, high-quality food brings out its best coloring.

The Patoti betta is mostly peaceful, but it will eat small tank mates. Keep it alone or with sturdy fish of a similar size.

Males are paternal mouthbrooders, and breeding them is moderately difficult. Do not mix fish from separate locations when breeding.

Good to know

The Patoti betta was described by Weber and de Beaufort in 1922. It belongs to the Betta unimaculata complex of large mouthbrooders. Adults show a dark body with iridescent scaling that can look green or blue under good light.

In the wild

Betta patoti comes from lowland forest waters of eastern Borneo, around the Mangar River near Balikpapan. The water there runs from soft and acidic to near neutral.
