Care at a glance

Overview

Because adults reach around 10 cm, give a pair a tank of at least 110 liters with a base of 80 cm and a tight lid. Keep water soft to medium and acidic to neutral, pH 5.0 to 7.0, at 22 to 27 C. Feed meaty live and frozen foods and expect it to eat small tankmates. Best kept alone or with sturdy, similar sized fish.

In the wild

Betta patoti is a large, dark mouthbrooder from lowland waters of eastern Borneo. Local populations differ in color, and the water ranges from soft acidic to near neutral. It needs a spacious tank with wood, leaf litter, and a well covered surface. Varied, high quality food brings out its best coloring.

Good to know

Described by Weber and de Beaufort in 1922, it belongs to the Betta unimaculata complex of large mouthbrooders. Males are paternal mouthbrooders. Adults show a dark body with iridescent scaling that can look green or blue under good light.

Did you know

Different wild populations of Betta patoti carry distinct color patterns, so fish from separate locations should not be mixed when breeding.
