Overview

Push the roots into a nutrient-rich fine substrate, sand or fine gravel with a little loam, and keep the central crown above the substrate line or it rots. It is adaptable about water values, needs no CO2, and asks only for medium light and patience, because growth is slow. Unheated tanks suit it fine. Propagation is the catch: daughter plants are occasional and raising it from spores is slow and fiddly, which is why it stays scarce in the hobby.

In the wild

A quillwort of Mediterranean temporary pools, with aquarium stock tracing to Sicily and Sardinia. These shallow basins flood in autumn and winter, when the plant grows submersed, then bake dry in summer, which it survives as a dormant corm-like base and a bank of spores. That drawdown rhythm makes it far more adaptable than its rarity suggests.

Good to know

Not a flowering plant at all but a lycophyte in the family Isoetaceae, a spore-bearing lineage related to the clubmosses and far older than any flowering aquarium plant. The trade sells it as Isoetes velata var. sicula; current taxonomy treats that name as a synonym of the wider Mediterranean species Isoetes longissima. The narrow, quill-like leaves rise in a grassy rosette from a swollen base, each leaf carrying a spore chamber where it meets the crown.

Did you know

Quillworts do much of their feeding underground: submersed Isoetes draw a large share of their carbon dioxide up through the roots from the sediment, an old trick of this lineage that lets them thrive in soft, carbon-poor pools where stem plants would starve.
