Overview

Treat it like a broad-leaved crypt for the midground. Plant it in nutrient-rich substrate with the rhizome and crown above the surface, since a buried crown rots. It manages without CO2 in a low-energy tank, but medium light with iron dosing and CO2 pushes the coppery pink-red colour and keeps the rosette tight. Expect some melt after planting, exactly like a crypt, then slow, steady replacement leaves. Propagate by cutting the rhizome or splitting off daughter plants.

In the wild

Red Round is a trade selection of Lagenandra meeboldii, not a wild population. The parent species grows on shaded, marshy riverbanks in south-west India, in Karnataka and Kerala, at elevations up to about 1200 m. Like other Lagenandra it lives emersed or half-submersed at the waterline and adapts to fully submersed growth in the aquarium.

Good to know

Lagenandra is a small aroid genus in the family Araceae that sits beside Cryptocoryne, separated by details of the spathe and by new leaves that unroll like a scroll instead of emerging folded. The species honours the German botanist and collector Alfred Meebold. Red Round is a commercial cultivar name for a compact selection with noticeably shorter, rounder blades than the standard Red form; it has no formal botanical standing.

Did you know

Set Red Round beside the ordinary Red form and the difference is obvious: the blades are shorter and nearly circular, so a mature plant reads more like a tiny pink-leaved Alocasia than a crypt relative.
