Overview

The easy Japan clover becomes a genuinely demanding plant in its variegated form. White leaf tissue does little photosynthesis, so it needs strong light, and CO2 with regular fertilisation is strongly advised to keep the runners creeping instead of stalling; in a dim low-tech tank it dwindles. Grow it as a foreground accent or slow carpet, pin the runners down until they root, and trim by cutting runners and replanting the plantlets. Watch for all-green reverted shoots and remove them, or the faster plain growth takes over the patch.

In the wild

A cultivated variegated selection that does not occur in the wild. The parent Hydrocotyle tripartita is a creeping marsh pennywort from Southeast Asia, running across wet ground and shallow margins emersed and adapting readily to submersed growth. The variegated form was introduced from the Sreepadma farm in India and circulates mainly as tissue culture.

Good to know

A selection of Hydrocotyle tripartita in the family Araliaceae, sold as 'Variegated' and 'Mini Variegated'. The clover-like, three-lobed leaves carry splashes of white and cream where the ordinary plant is uniform bright green, and it runs smaller and more compact than the standard Japan form. Variegation is a chlorophyll deficiency, stable here but carried at a real photosynthetic cost.

Did you know

The variegation is honest biology, not a paint job: the white patches are tissue with almost no chlorophyll, so every pale leaf is one the plant partly carries as a passenger. That is why a species famous for smothering foreground rocks turns slow and deliberate in its variegated dress.
