Overview

A slow midground to background accent grown on hardscape: attach the rhizome to rock or wood and never bury it. Medium light keeps the red petioles vivid without inviting algae onto the long-lived leaves, and CO2 is not required but shortens the wait for new growth. It appreciates some flow and stable parameters, and shrugs off plant-picking fish about as well as an Anubias. Propagate by separating rooted sections of rhizome.

In the wild

A trade-named Homalomena form from Borneo, sold as Broad Cuneate or Broad Cuneate Red Stem, with no documented wild population beyond that origin. Its relatives grow along shaded rainforest streams, rooted at the waterline and flooded seasonally, and the plant keeps that amphibious character in cultivation. Trade stock is farm raised.

Good to know

The name is unusually literal for an aquarium trade plant: cuneate is the botanist's term for a wedge-shaped leaf base, so the label simply describes the broad blade with its tapered base. The form belongs to Homalomena in the family Araceae, the same family as Bucephalandra, and carries no formal species description. Its signature is the deep red petiole under each spade-shaped green blade.

Did you know

Most trade names for rare aroids are places or fantasy names; this one is a botany lesson. Cuneate means wedge-shaped, so the plant is literally named for the geometry of its leaf base.
