Overview
Attach the rhizome to wood or rock and keep it exposed, as burying it invites rot. It wants only low to moderate light, tolerates being grown without CO2, and generally sits still for weeks before pushing new leaves. Steady water parameters matter, since sudden swings can trigger melt and rot.
In the wild
Homalomena 'Sekadau South' is a rare rheophyte aroid with lance shaped, leathery dark green leaves rising from an upright stem like rhizome, often on reddish stalks. It comes from Borneo and is grown much like anubias or bucephalandra. The tough leaves and slow habit make it a striking specimen for wood or rock.
Good to know
Homalomena is a large genus of tropical aroids, and many aquarium forms are undescribed collector plants labeled by their collection locality rather than a species name. They grow from a fleshy rhizome and are relatives of anubias and philodendron.
Did you know
The rhizomes of many Homalomena are strongly aromatic when cut, with a spicy scent that has long made them useful in traditional medicine and perfume.
