Overview
An easy, fast little stem with rounded fresh green leaves, best in the midground of nano tanks or in loose groups among hardscape. It grows in ordinary light without CO2, though both improve density. Its one quirk is the roots: it only makes very fine ones that anchor poorly, so older stands tend to lift out of the substrate, and the practical routine is to replant the tips and discard the bottoms. It also does well in unheated tanks and can spend the summer in a pond.
In the wild
Native to subtropical southern South America, in southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, and naturalized in parts of the southern United States. It grows as an amphibious creeper in wet meadows, ditches and the margins of streams and ponds, emersed on damp ground and submersed when flooded, and it shrugs off cool water.
Good to know
One of very few aquarium plants from Rubiaceae, the coffee and bedstraw family. It was described from Brazilian material collected by Philipp Salzmann, whom the epithet honours, and has been shuffled between Hedyotis, Oldenlandia and Anotis over the years; Oldenlandia salzmannii is the accepted name, though the trade still sells it as Hedyotis salzmannii. It has also circulated misidentified as Bacopa sp. Pantanal.

Flowgrow rates it hardy down to about 4 degrees, so this coffee-family stem can overwinter in a cold-water setup that would kill most of the tropical stems it is sold alongside.
