The Uberis betta is a small blackwater betta for a species tank of its own. It is a difficult fish, suited to experienced keepers.

Caring for the Uberis betta

Keep Uberis bettas as a single pair rather than a colony. Give the pair a species tank of at least 11 gal (40 L), with a base of 45 cm. Shade it as a blackwater tank with dense cover, driftwood, floating plants and leaf litter. Fit a tight lid.

Give them very soft, acidic water at 73 to 81°F (23 to 27°C) and a pH of 4.5 to 6.0. Stable, warm, tannin-rich conditions keep the fish healthy. Feed small live and frozen foods rather than dried food alone.

Like others in the coccina group, males are territorial and can be aggressive toward one another, so any group needs space and cover. Uberis bettas are mostly peaceful otherwise, but choose tank mates with caution. They are bubble nesters, and breeding them is of medium difficulty.

Tan and Ng described Betta uberis in 2006, and it belongs to the family Osphronemidae. It also goes by the name green moon spot betta.

The Uberis betta comes from peat swamp forests and streams in Central and West Kalimantan, on Borneo. The water there is soft, acidic, mineral-poor and stained dark, with plenty of leaf litter.
