Overview
A solitary centrepiece bulb for the background of a larger tank, where its ruffled straps can reach around 60 cm. Plant the tuber shallowly with the tip exposed in a nutritious substrate, since it feeds mainly through its roots. Moderate light suits it and CO2 is helpful but not essential; what it really dislikes is disturbance, so avoid big water changes and do not keep moving the bulb. If growth stalls after a strong run, let the tuber rest rather than discarding it, and separate daughter tubers to propagate.
In the wild
Aponogeton capuronii grows in rivers and streams of southern and southeastern Madagascar, rooted in the bed with its leaves trailing in the current. Like the rest of the Madagascan aponogetons it grows from a tuber that carries it through seasonal lows in its rivers. The water it comes from is soft and slightly acidic.
Good to know
A member of Aponogetonaceae named for Rene Capuron, the French botanist who spent decades documenting the flora of Madagascar. It is often compared to Aponogeton ulvaceus but stays smaller, with firmer strap-shaped leaves whose margins are strongly undulate, almost ruffled. Unusually for the genus, it is reported to be less inclined to enter a dormant resting phase than most of its Madagascan relatives.
Did you know
Most Madagascan aponogetons insist on a dormant rest that catches new keepers out, but capuronii is one of the least dormancy-prone of the group and will often grow straight through the year in a stable tank.
