Overview

The low-maintenance choice among hairgrass carpets because it holds itself at a few centimeters instead of growing into a lawn that needs constant mowing. Split the pot or tissue culture into small plugs and plant them a couple of centimeters apart in a nutrient-rich substrate; runners knit them together over several weeks. Medium light is the working minimum, and CO2 plus regular fertilization roughly doubles the speed and density of the fill-in. Trim rarely: when the carpet finally gets shaggy, cut it back near the substrate and let fresh culms regrow from the runners.

In the wild

The trade name points to Belém in Pará, Brazil, but the plant's wild origin was never formally documented and its species identity remains unsettled. Hairgrasses of this type grow in shallow water and on wet mud along lake and stream margins, submersed part of the year and emersed when levels drop. What circulates today is farm and tissue culture stock, not wild material.

Good to know

A spikerush in the sedge family Cyperaceae, not a true grass: the blades are photosynthetic stems, called culms, and the actual leaves are reduced to sheaths at the base. The same plant moves through the trade under several names, including Eleocharis sp. 'Mini', Eleocharis acicularis 'Mini' and Eleocharis pusilla, and hobbyists have spent whole forum threads untangling which name arrived from where. Whatever the correct epithet, it stays distinctly shorter and curlier than standard dwarf hairgrass.

Did you know

Its big selling point is what it does not do: grow tall. Where standard dwarf hairgrass wants regular mowing to stay a carpet, Belem tops out around 5 to 7 cm with a slight curl, so a carpet trimmed once largely keeps its shape.
